FAQ
FAQ from vehicle owners
What is the International Security Register?
The International Security Register (ISR ) is a UK-based, highly secure database, owned and operated exclusively by Retainagroup Ltd, the UK's leading supplier of security marking and registration systems to the Motor Industry for nearly 30 years.
The 24/7 manned ISR contact line (no answer machines or recorded messages!) provides an all year round, immediate verification service by highly trained and security vetted operators adhering to stringent protocols (Thatcham audited).
How does the system operate?
The Retainagroup system is based upon three simple but highly effective procedures - Marking, Registration and Verification.
- Vehicle windows are etched with an overtly visible and permanent unique code and the 24/7 ISR contact telephone number.
- Details of your vehicle, together with the etched code and ownership information, will be recorded on the ISR. Confirmation of registration will be sent to you by Retainagroup within 28 days of collecting your vehicle. It is important to contact the ISR on 01233 333000 if you have not received confirmation within that period.
- Immediate verification of your vehicle's identity and ownership can be provided at any time of the day or night by just one call to the ISR.
If my vehicle is registered in the name of a company, should I provide my personal details to the ISR?
Yes, if you register your personal details, you'll be authorised to contact the ISR out of office hours, assuring peace of mind 24 hours a day.
Is it possible for anyone else to obtain my name or any other details through the ISR?
No. If asked questions about your vehicle ISR operators will only confirm whether the information given to them corresponds to the details held on the ISR.
If there is any doubt about an enquiry, an ISR operator will telephone you, the registered owner or keeper to clarify the situation.
Retainagroup is registered under the Data Protection Act 1998.
What should I do if my address or vehicle details change?
Please complete and return the ‘Information Update' form on-line or contact the ISR.
What happens if I sell my vehicle?
Simply complete and return the ‘Information Update' form on-line or contact the ISR.
What is the purpose of registering my vehicle's mileage?
It protects buyers from purchasing used vehicles which have had their mileage falsified. As criminals cannot profit by tampering with a protected vehicle's mileage it creates another deterrent against theft.
How can I register my details on the ISR if I have bought a vehicle second-hand?
To keep the ISR up to date and ensure that the vehicle continues to be fully protected, please complete the ‘Information Update' form on-line and make a payment of £20.00, the once off registration fee (there are no annual charges or subscriptions) or contact the ISR*.

Data Protection Policy – International Security Register
In accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998, Retainagroup Limited upholds the eight principles in relation to its secure data base – the International Security Register (ISR) in that-
- Personal data is obtained directly and voluntarily from individuals, or is provided by our trade customers in a fair and lawful manner.
- Data is held on file for legitimate verification and security purposes. Data is passed to our trade customers either when the data subject has returned a completed form without opting out, or by default if the data subject has not responded to an acknowledgement form within 60 days.
- The data held contains no more information than is necessary regarding an individual, in order to maintain an adequate history of the life of a security marked and registered item.
- Every effort is made to ensure that data on the ISR is up-to-date and the verification process ensures the data is as accurate as possible.
- When electronic data is marked as “old/archived”, it is stored indefinitely in a secure environment. Information is kept in order to support crime prevention and investigation enquiries by law enforcement agencies.
- Data is accessible on written request and a discretionary administration cost of £10 is payable. A “screen dump” can be provided to the data subject within 10 days. The ISR verification process ensures that data subjects know what is stored and that the information is correct; if inaccurate information is notified, it is amended or, if requested, erased. Access to data subjects is “removed” from the ISR on request and their record is archived to a secure area.
- The ISR is protected by a firewall and there are no open links through the Internet. Paper records are archived and then destroyed by shredding and recycling the paper after a set length of time. All staff entrusted with access to the ISR do so through a password entry system and each member of staff is security vetted prior to joining the company. All transactions are logged and traceable.
Currently the data on the ISR is used only in the EEA.
